ROOT Photography Workshop
A creative ritual connecting to the magic of Earth.
🌱 ROOT – A Sustainable Darkroom Workshop
ROOT: A Return to the Earth Through Photography
Create images with your hands, the soil beneath your feet, and the ocean’s salt on your skin.
About ROOT
ROOT is not just a photography workshop—it's a reconnection. Over one immersive day, you'll learn how to make developer from mud and fixer from seawater, creating real, tangible photographs without a single synthetic chemical.
This is sustainable darkroom practice, where your materials are harvested from nature, and every image is a collaboration with the earth.
What You’ll Experience
🌾 Harvest – Gather and prepare your natural materials.
A jar of earth
This could be from your garden, childhood home, from the pot of your favourite plant, from the home you’ve always lived or perhaps hope to live. The earth that connects you with feeling rooted and secure.
A jar of sea water
This could be from the sea nearest to your home, or the sea you love to visit most or perhaps the sea you like to swim or surf in. The sea that connects you with a sense of home and belonging.
🖤 Darkroom Alchemy – Discover how to turn your natural materials into your own handmade developer and fixer before using them to learn how to develop and print black-and-white photographs in a fully Analogue Darkroom. You can forage for plants and found objects to make prints from or bring your own negatives.
🌍 Eco-Education – Gain insight into the environmental impact of traditional photographic chemistry and learn how to reduce your artistic footprint.
📷 Create with Meaning – Walk away with prints you developed using only the elements—and a deeper connection to your process.
Perfect For:
Photographers (beginner to advanced)
Environmental artists
Analog photography lovers
Those curious about alternative processes
Anyone craving a slower, grounded, creative experience
